Cyber dating abuse among Mexican university students: Relationship between victimization and perceived severity

Cyber dating abuse is a growing problem in digital environments, with relevant psychosocial implications. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between experiences of cyber dating abuse victimization and perceptions of its severity among Mexican university students, considering gender differences. A quantitative, non-experimental design was used with 250 participants —188 women and 62 men—, using an adaptation of the Technology-facilitated Abuse in Relationships Scale (TAR Scale) and an ad hoc instrument to assess perceived severity. The results showed that women experienced greater victimization, especially in sexual coercion (U=5087.5, p=.001), and rated these behaviors as more severe than men (U=3879.5, p<.001). Likewise, participants who reported having experienced cyber dating abuse tended to perceive some behaviors as less severe than those who had not experienced them. The study concludes that the phenomenon is influenced by gender roles and the normalization of violence, highlighting the need for gender-based interventions and instruments that more accurately reflect the complexity of the phenomenon.
