Espacios residuales contemporáneos en sectores del área urbana de la ciudad: Caso Río Portoviejo

Abstract

Especially since the last decades of the 20th century, the accelerated expansion of cities, together with the transformation in the modes of production, has caused the generation of residual spaces, often in strategic places. The banks of the rivers are not exempt from this phenomenon. The objective of the study was to identify the perception, satisfaction, and needs of the population regarding the current state of urban elements in the residual spaces on the edge of the Portoviejo River in four sectors of the urban area of the city. A descriptive scope was applied, with a mixed and cross-sectional approach. The study sample was defined by non probabilistic, convenience-intentional sampling, having a total of 104 participants distributed in the four analysis sectors. The results showed that the studied sectors have a low perception of beauty, with various deficits related to urban equipment, infrastructure and public space. It is concluded that the recovery of urban rivers allows the elimination of residual spaces that question the value of the environment and also the recovery of that historical and socio-cultural legacy.
